Choosing a 240V to 220V transformer
Nominal is not measured. A service called 240V is a name for a range, and under ANSI C84.1 that range legitimately extends to 252V, where lightly loaded feeders tend to sit at night and on weekends. Equipment carrying a 220V nameplate sees the real number rather than the nominal one, and 252V is 14.5 percent above what it was built for. A 240V to 220V buck-boost transformer removes about 20 volts from the supply so the machine receives the voltage its designer assumed. Like every buck-boost, it is an insulating transformer reconnected as an autotransformer, and because it processes only the difference between 240 and 220 it stays small and inexpensive relative to the load it protects. Single-phase and three-phase versions are available in 10, 15, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 amp ratings.
220V nameplates arrive from two directions. Older domestic equipment dates from when 220V was the ordinary US marking, and plenty of it is still earning its keep.
