Blower motors, ECM modules, and compressors that keep failing early are often a voltage problem, not an equipment problem — and replacing the part again won’t fix it.
The symptom: HVAC equipment that dies before its time
If you service rooftop units, condensers, mini-splits, or air handlers, you’ve seen the pattern — a building that eats ECM motors, control boards, and contactors far faster than it should. The equipment isn’t defective and the install isn’t wrong. The power feeding it is out of spec.
The hidden cause: sustained overvoltage
Utilities are allowed to deliver service across a range, and many run toward the high end of it. In parts of East Texas on the Oncor grid, for example, a nominal 240V service is commonly measured sitting near — or above — the top of the allowable range for hours at a time. Modern HVAC equipment with ECM and inverter-driven motors is sensitive to that: sustained overvoltage runs the electronics hotter, shortens motor and capacitor life, and shows up as repeat failures long before the unit’s rated lifespan.
Detect, then eliminate
Detect. Confirm it before you spend on parts. Measure the supply voltage under load over time — ideally with a data logger across a full duty cycle — and compare it to the equipment nameplate and the allowable service range. A multimeter spot-check at 9 a.m. won’t catch the afternoon peak.
Eliminate. Once you’ve confirmed a consistent over- or under-voltage condition, a buck-boost transformer corrects it permanently.
